SUMMARY:Gender in the 21st Century Presentation - Duxbury Senior Center
DESCRIPTION:American philosopher and gender studies scholar Judith Butler wrote\, “There is no gender identity behind the expressions of gender… identity is performatively constituted by the very ‘expressions’ that are said to be its results.” So\, how do we define what gender means in today’s world?  If you’re interested in learning more on this topic\, the Duxbury Council on Aging is hosting the enlightening presentation and conversation “Gender in the 21st Century: An Overview” that aims to shed light on how the perception of gender has shifted and changed since the beginning of the century. People from all communities are invited to attend this event on Thursday October 17th\, starting at 5:30 pm. Visit the Center’s website at DuxburySeniorCenter dot org to register.

SUMMARY:Timeless Tales Children's Lit Book Club at Duxbury Senior Center
DESCRIPTION:Classic children’s books become timeless for good reason: while the words may be simple\, the more complex truths and universal themes illuminate our young minds and continue to nourish our thinking throughout our lives. As George Bernard Shaw implored “Make it a rule never to give a child a book you would not read yourself.” To that end\, the Duxbury Senior Center has established the Timeless Tales Children’s Lit Bookclub. The next group meets on September 10th from 11 to 12pm\, when Shelly Sommers\, a former middle school librarian and writing teacher\, will facilitate a discussion around the enduring tale of adolescence\, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The group will meet in the Senior Center’s Weyerhaeuser Room. Visit the center’s website to register.

SUMMARY:Animated Film Festival at Duxbury Senior Center
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday August 22nd the Duxbury Senior Center is hosting an Animated Film Festival celebrating the animated films of beloved British artist Raymond Briggs. Although Briggs himself never animated his work\, his illustrations inspired animators worldwide who thoughtfully brought books such as The Bear and The Snowman to life on the big screen\, lovingly capturing the vulnerable aspects of humanity\, truth and compassion Briggs poured into the tone and feel of his work.  The night will be facilitated by storyteller and educator Beth Camron Kilbridge. The Animated Film Festival will begin at 1pm in the Large Classroom at the Senior Center.  There are limited seats and registration is required for this fantastic and free celebration of visual storytelling.
