In 1762, Hannah Hovey, a black woman living in servitude in Plymouth, married Briton Hammon, author of the first African American slave narrative, at Plymouth’s First Church, where Hannah was listed as a member beginning in 1748. Learn about this historical couple and more of the Early History of People of Color from Professor Keith Green at the Pilgrim Hall Museum 2024 Speaker Series on Thursday October 17th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Through examining the lives of Hovey and Hammon, and their connection to the First Church of Plymouth as a source of spiritual sustenance and community, Professor Green’s lecture will underscore the larger layered narrative about the lived experience of people of color in colonial communities in Plymouth and greater New England. Cost is only $5 for members and $10 for non-members. If you are a student with an ID, you get in free! Get tickets at pilgrimhall.org.
